By the beginning of the 16th century (the 1500s) the desire for more comfortable and elagant living made the nobility want purly residential palaces. Some castles were allowed to decay into picturesque ruins, and a residential palace was built nearby, others were radically altered into a more comfortable, if less strog defensively, residence.
The downfall of feudalism also contributed to the decline of castles. Before, Barons supported a de-centralized government(ruled by a king), and baron's personal ambitions for power were controlled by each other. As kings grew stronger, they discouraged the building of castles, because unruly subjects could rebel behind the safty of their walls.
Of course, gunpowder also played a pivitol role in the distruction of castles. By 1500, 30-40 cannon might be used by a beseiging army to blast a castle, even the strongset twoers and walls could only stand the bombardment for so long.
